TheHealthPsychologist News from the Society for Health Psychology

August 8-11, 2019
Chicago, IL

Travis Lovejoy, PhD, MPH, Program Chair

Greetings from the Society for Health Psychology (SfHP) Program Committee! First, let me take a moment to extend a sincere thank you to the many SfHP members and new recruits who volunteered their time reviewing abstract submissions! The process of planning the program for the meeting would not be possible without you.

Although August may seem far away, the 2019 APA Convention will be here before you know it! We’re excited about the program and the outstanding health psychology science, practice, and professional development opportunities that it will offer.

Our program includes many sessions that highlight this year’s theme of understanding social and cultural factors in health psychology. SfHP Presidential Programming includes the following presentations and workshop:

  • Presidential Address by Dr. Nancy Ruddy: Psychology – A Health Services Profession? A Call to Action
  • An Interactive Workshop Led by Drs. Helen Coons, Nancy Ruddy, Kathleen Brown, Zeeshan Butt, Lisa Kearney, John Linton, Susan McDaniel, Jared Skillings, and Wendy Ward: Leadership Strategies for Psychologists in Academic Health Centers and Community Hospitals
  • Invited Presidential Address from Irwin Redliner, MD, Marcos Reyes, PhD, and Amit Suneja, MD: Chronic Disease Management Post Natural Disaster: A Role for Health Psychology

Convention attendees can also look forward to interactive programming that highlights patient perspectives and includes non-psychologist allied health providers as panelists. As in years past, many SfHP Councils and Committees will be active at the Convention, with symposia sponsored by the International Relations Committee, Publications & Communications Committee, Pain Psychology Interest Group, Women’s Health Interest Group, Health Research Council, Diversity Council, Education & Training Council, Early Career Professionals Council, Student Council, and ABPP.

You can look forward to learning more about these and the other programming in future SfHP and APA communications. We look forward to making the full schedule available in April at: societyforhealthpsychology.org.

Convention registration will open in April 2019, and we encourage you to register early for the best rates! Registration and hotel reservation information will be available at: www.apa.org/convention.

We hope you’ll be joining the SfHP and your colleagues in Chicago this year!
