I am a practitioner, and I have owned and operated my own health psychology clinic for 28 years. I am also a researcher, with my greatest interest being in translational science. Since it is challenging to get a grant when you are self-employed, my research studies are self-funded.While I see a variety of patients my practice, I specialize in the assessment and treatment of patients with chronic pain, disability and trauma. Among my translational science studies, I lobbied for the passage of a biopsychosocial law, and then published a 15-year longitudinal study of its economic and treatment benefits. I have also worked to write/revise 11 evidence-based medicine guidelines, and developed standardized tests and software. Through a mixture of research on healthcare reform and medical economics, publishing about billing, and efforts at lobbying legislators and payers, I feel I have developed some insight into the healthcare reform process.
Over the years, I have served Division 38 in various capacities. I have served as the Chair of the Clinical Health Services Council, in which capacity I helped to create the Division 38 primary care group. I also served on the Interdivisional Healthcare Committee, on the APA/SBM Practice Steering Committee, earned the Timothy Jeffrey Award for health psychology, and became a D38 Fellow.
I am running for Division 38 President-Elect because the healthcare reform process continues to evolve, and it remains unclear how it will impact patient care and the role of psychology. I believe I could make a contribution at this time.

I am honored to be nominated to serve as President-Elect of Division 38. Since 2009, I have been Chair of the Division’s Publications and Communications Council. In that capacity, I have helped to select editors for Health Psychology and The Health Psychologist, negotiate the publishing contract with APA, and launch the Division’s social media presence. As President, I would pursue initiatives that attract new members, especially early career professionals, meet the professional and academic needs of our community, and ensure health psychology remains actively engaged in efforts to advance public health nationally and internationally.
I am a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in the College of Liberal Arts. My research program focuses on specifying the processes underlying the initiation and maintenance of behavior change in order to inform the design of interventions to improve health. I was recognized with receipt of the APA Early Career Award in Health Psychology in 2002 and am a fellow of Division 38, European Health Psychology Society, Association for Psychological Science, and the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. I am committed to promoting the integration of research and practice, supporting professional training and development, and creating opportunities for national and international multidisciplinary collaborations. I co-founded the NCI/NIH Advanced Training Institute for Health Behavior Theory, was the first President of the Social Personality and Health Network, and co-chair the Society for Behavioral Medicine Theories and Techniques of Behavior Change Interventions Special Interest Group.
