Description
Since 2006, the Integrated Health Psychology Training Program (IHPTP) has provided clinical psychology training experiences to postdoctoral fellows and interns in primary care and family practice settings IHPTP is sponsored and facilitated by the Wright Institute and partners with the John Muir Family Medicine Residency Program (JMFMR) to provide an interdisciplinary postdoctoral training experience in integrated primary care.
Training Goals
The goals of the postdoctoral residency program include acquiring APA Profession-Wide Competencies in: 1) integration and application of science and practice; 2) ethical and legal standards; 3) individual and cultural diversity; 4) professional behavior; 5) professional communication and interpersonal skills; 6) assessment; 7) treatment planning and intervention; 8) supervision; and 9) consultation and interprofessional/interdisciplinary skills. The training program is structured to be sequential, cumulative, and to progressively increase in complexity and breadth over time. It also includes socialization into the profession of psychology while preparing postdoctoral residents for independent practice upon licensure.
Clinical Training Activities
The postdoctoral residency training provides opportunities in the following:
Leadership and Administration
- Site Liaison, works directly with the leadership of both IHPTP and JMH to help with the coordination of onsite clinical activities
- Co-facilitate weekly developmental consultation with clinical educator with progression to facilitator
- Attend weekly supervisory conference call with IHPTP leadership.
- Mentorship of IHPTP interns
- Participation in federal grant-related activities
Teaching
- Weekly teaching of behavioral health skills to family medicine residents alongside the clinical educator.
- Monthly, teach IHPTP Thursday seminar with co-facilitation of group supervision.
Research
- Postdoctoral fellows will present at the Scholarly Forum, expected June 2026.
- Opportunity for participation in program research presentations and publications.
- Self-directed education to pursue interests, examinations, prepare teaching materials and presentations. This time will fluctuate weekly, based on teaching demand
Collaboration and Consultation
- Interdisciplinary team at JMFMR may include family medicine resident physicians, medical students, pharmacy trainees, faculty physicians, psychiatrists, medical assistants, care coordinators and other medical providers
Clinical Intervention
- Exam room warm handoffs
- Brief individual psychotherapy
- Diagnostic assessments (ADHD and Autism)
Supervision and mentorship by the faculty leadership of both IHPTP and JMFMR Clinical Faculty
Weekly Schedule (may slightly differ)
- 8 hours of clinical warm handoffs and consultation
- 12 hours of clinical individual visits and diagnostic assessments with 70% filled with patient contact
- 4 hours of Specialty Clinics
- 4 hours of teaching and supervising (some weeks +4 hours). Includes: co-teaching family medicine residents BH skills’ co-facilitating department consultation; monthly teaching in IHPTP seminars
- 12 hours of administrative duties and training/education. This may include clinical supervision, administrative activities and postdoctoral-directed training/education.
