VA Puget Sound Health Care System

We are pleased to announce the availability of a Postdoctoral Psychology Fellowship position in Behavioral Medicine and Pain Psychology (anticipated start date: August 2025). This fellowship aims to increase opportunities for the training of psychologists within integrated medicine settings, with particular focus on comprehensive pain management (approximately 50% time).

The Pain Clinic is an interprofessional outpatient pain-management program for Veterans with complex chronic pain.  Fellows will perform co-disciplinary (alongside a medical provider) comprehensive pain intake evaluations with patients referred for interventions and provide consultation and treatment for a wide spectrum of problems related to chronic pain, such as functional impairment, medication misuse, maladaptive illness behavior, management of other chronic conditions, and non-adherence to medical recommendations. Our wide range of patients allows fellows with interests in special populations to customize their caseloads and experiences based upon specific aspects of diversity (e.g., age, disability, gender, race, ethnicity, rurality, service era, sexual orientation, spirituality).

The Fellow has the opportunity to work in multiple medical settings and with multiple interprofessional teams, including up to 40% time in behavioral medicine settings outside of pain clinic.  This can include clinical rotations in:
– Transplant Psychology (Marrow Transplant Unit)
– Primary Care–Mental Health Integration
– Home-Based Primary Care
– Inpatient Rehabilitation
– Spinal Cord Injury
– Neuropsychology

The position and duties are carefully tailored to the professional goals and training needs of the fellow. A description of the fellowship program, including detailed instructions for application, is available here: https://www.psychologytraining.va.gov/docs/Seattle-psych-postdoc.doc

Our program is APA-accredited in Clinical Psychology as a single, integrated program. This is a one-year clinical position, with the possibility of protected research time for qualified applicants with a history of publication and research accomplishment. All fellows are expected to participate in quality improvement research and/or program development and evaluation. All fellows attain advanced skills and knowledge in a common core of professional domains, including ethics and professional standards, research strategies, teaching and supervision, cultural diversity and individual differences, assessment and intervention, professional development, and interprofessional consultation. Training occurs within a Scientist-Practitioner framework, within a University-affiliated and academically-oriented healthcare environment.

VA fellows receive a competitive stipend paid in 26 biweekly installments. The annual fellowship stipend at the Seattle VA is $58,570 for first-year fellows. Health insurance is provided. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens and must have completed a doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, including a doctoral internship, from APA-accredited programs. The VA is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. Applicants from underserved and underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to apply as we are very committed to attracting a diverse class of fellows, as well as in training a future generation of psychologists capable of delivering high quality care to an increasingly diverse population.

Applications for all positions are due December 1, 2024. For general questions, please feel free to contact the Director of Training, Stephen McCutcheon, Ph.D. (Stephen.McCutcheon@va.gov) or for questions specific to this position contact the Track Lead, Lisa Glynn, Ph.D. (Lisa.Glynn2@va.gov).
