Roundtable for Minority Women at the American Psychosomatic Society Annual Meeting next Friday!

The Diversity Council will be hosting a roundtable at the American Psychomatic Society Annual Meeting on Friday, March 8th at 5:30pm PST titled, “Minority Women in Health Sciences: A Conversation between APS Members & the APA Division 38 Society for Health Psychology Diversity Council.”

Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) clearly demonstrates that minority women, including women from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups or disadvantaged backgrounds and women with disabilities, face unique and significant challenges from graduate school and beyond in health-related scientific fields. However, opportunities for minority women to directly communicate their needs to organizations in order to improve resources and available support are very rare. Therefore, we invite all individuals who self-identify as minority women to pull up a chair at the (round)table with us in order to build connections and network with a community of minority women peers as well as have an honest conversation about their experiences.

The goal of this roundtable is to collaboratively 1) discuss needed changes that would help minority women thrive in the health sciences, 2) identify how minority women can play a role in supporting each other, particularly trainees and early career professionals, 3) review available diversity-promoting grant mechanisms at the NIH and beyond, and 4) synthesize major discussion points to guide future collaborations between APS and APA Division 38 programming with the aim of creating Diversity Council initiatives that are responsive to the group’s feedback. This roundtable will offer participants a safe, stimulating forum to discuss intersectional issues specific to minority women. We hope that this conversation will serve as an important step towards supporting minority women and ensuring that research organizations continue to build a diverse community of health science researchers that represents the populations we aim to serve.
