Pain Psychology Interest Group
The American Psychological Association is developing a new series of APA Micro Credentials, with the first one planned for development being a Pain Psychology Micro Credential (PPMC). In this new educational model, each Micro Credential will build upon graduate training and clinical experience in the health professions. These Micro Credentials serve to recognize the successful completion of a core of foundational knowledge and skills and are designed to facilitate the development of professional competence within a targeted domain of interdisciplinary interest.
Previously, the terms “pain psychology” and “pain psychologist” have been routinely used in the absence of formally recognized standards or criteria. APA’s PPMC though will be based on recommended competencies described in the American Psychologist. The PPMC is intended to promote the development of an appreciation for the ongoing conceptual, empirical, diagnostic and practical advances in the field of pain science.
